‘Welcoming Light ~ Reflecting Winter Solstice and Embracing Warmth’

Given the nature of these smaller silk pieces, I feel they are best used as an intentional place to hold memorabilia—an essence of holding space; simply a place to come back to and be reminded.

Given the nature of these smaller silk pieces, I feel they are best used as an intentional place to hold memorabilia—an essence of holding space; simply a place to come back to and be reminded.

I’m captivated by the variety of textures that can emerge, even from such similar fabrics. While the choice of plant material plays the most significant role, subtle variations also have a profound effect—such as cutting the plant material into smaller pieces, arranging patterns scattered vs precisely, or adjusting the steaming duration. Ultimately, it mostly comes down to finding whichever balance feels right for the moment.

Ever since I have been fascinated about natural bundle dye, I’ve been enamoured by the results that come through silk. Silk is an animal fiber, and naturally these fibers attach with a greater ease & radiant clarity versus cellulose fibers (plants). Part of connecting with Ephemeral Art is I very, very rarely want to buy anything new. I can explain it mostly as a knot in my gut telling me to be as mindful of how I put more of anything out in the world. Stepping back from the consumer cycle and using what is lightly used already - an offering to give new life to something needing a little attention.

Kindly enough, I was given some swaths of silk that were scraps from the inside of kimonos. I felt so pleased with the results on these prints and the curiosity that went into making these ~ I hope to find a way to connect more with sustainable or gifted silk, and potentially share through mindful workshop experiences.

Negative-speak for ourselves can be woven so closely with how we move through the world, that we forget it’s possible to eliminate it. More recently I had a way to come to terms with a certain narrative that has lived inside me - mostly insecurities seeking anything to attach to. It showed up as assuming others peoples perspectives on my own and creating a believable negative narrative. Understanding that others’ values may not line sincerely with my own was a first step, and working to simply accept the differences instead of illuminating any ounce of insecurity I have for myself was the next.

Being back in the US after being away for over four years, my values definitely have changed. I notice I interact with this intense need to try to be someone I was years ago, or reinstill values that actually don’t hold a similar precedence anymore. My vulnerability here is to hold some light to the differences, that we are blessed with these opportunities to constantly evolve and change ourself. A truth of today can be a learning for tomorrow — as I’ve had the opportunity to recognize how this negative-speak continually hinders my intentions for the future, day-by-day now I can welcome the warmth of understanding the difference.

Reflecting on this past month, I’ve been warmed by the opportunity to explore creativity in such a casual and natural way. The art studio space has allowed me to delve into this aspect of myself with greater sincerity that I haven’t entirely interacted with yet. Ideas and projects have found a way to come together organically, guided mostly by a pure, simple intuitive nature to create — both curious and playful, much as a child moves through the world.
As I’m engaging more with Ephemeral, and finding ways to cohese words together, I feel enthusiastic about the shift that’s welcoming itself and ultimately new ways to put art out in the world. I look forward to sharing more with you ~

Welcomed myself into an art studio space at The Art Garage ~~

I’ve had most of this boxed up since being back, kind of feels like the openness of stretching your chest wide after being crunched up for awhile. I’m inviting a lot of curiosity and openness to the space ~ welcoming whichever authenticity feels to create.

Lately I’ve been intrigued by weaving and wanting to learn to make bead earrings. But I’m excited to have more space to interact with natural dye again and especially the ability to leave the space messy and come back to it ~ I’ve never afforded myself a spot like that before.

I spent time my first day writing a bit of intention for the space ~ really emphasizing curiosity and wonder for an art practice. I welcome any kind thoughts from you as well in maintaining a general focus, patience, and trust!

I created these after observing and interacting with Jones Point on the Fox River Trail here, where I spent a good deal of time grounding through some re-acclimation time after arriving back from Vietnam.

I feel grateful to Jone’s Point serene calmness in the mix of rough, ragged-road Green Bay and especially grateful for a call to create in this way. I never know exactly what will be called from any location, so I’m as curious as anyone else what will be inspired to be made.
